Beginner Dog Report

24th March 2008

Judge: Erica Hyde
Ring Steward: Julie Turrell
38 entries, 23 booked in, 21 came to work, we had 4 WFC and 1 broke stays

Thanks to Sheila Hyde (and no we’re not related) for asking me to judge. Special thanks to Sheila Farris and her trusty band of stay stewards (strange how I always seem to see the same old faces in the stay ring). Also thanks to Shaylers catering team for a very tasty hot lunch, something that was very welcome as the weather was somewhat chilly although a lot better than on Friday. We had a good bunch of handlers who hardly kept us waiting and we had finished by lunch time (apart from presenting the prizes).

1st Latchets Clyde (Oban) GSD. d.o.b 14.12.2003 handled by Kate Williams: losing 3 - HOL 1½ a bit of over enthusiasm caused slight weaving and a crab towards the end of the exercise. Rec ½ again over enthusiasm caused the problem which was a slight crooked sit. HF ½ another little crab coming out of the AT towards the end. Ret ½ slightly crooked again.

2nd Dynamo Joe Beg Ex (Joe) WSD. d.o.b 15.11.2002. Handled by Julie Duesbury: losing 3½ - HOL 1 couple of slight drifts. Rec C. HF 1½ again very minor drifts of the handler’s leg. Ret 1.

3rd Barney son of Bearcub (Barney) X. d.o.b 2.9.2004. Handled by Pattie Harris: losing 3½ - HOL 1½ slight drifts off handler which improved as he got going. Rec ½ slight crooked sit. HF ½ slight wide on AT but seemed to have gained in confidence. Ret 1.

4th Audlynton Gilbert CDex UDex (Badger) GSD d.o.b 20.2.2002 Handled by Trisha Harding: lost 4 – HOL 1 slight crab going into a turn and then again just after AT. Rec ½ slight crooked sit, HF a couple of slight crabs and a couple of drifts off the handlers leg. Ret ½ again just slightly crooked. Won run off by completing a clear recall.

5th Bluella Son Of Woodie (Glen) BC. d.o.b 1.2.2006 Handled by Fred Wilkinson: lost 4 – HOL 2 a little inconsistent in his position at times which caused some drifting of the handlers leg, he also dropped back on one of the left turns. Rec C. HF 2 very similar to HOL – Glen sometimes gets distracted and this causes him to drift away from the handler or hang back slightly. Ret C.

6th Moonvale Apache by Shenlyn (Oliver) CKCS d.o.b. 13.6.2001 Handled by Kate Hughes: lost 5 - HOL 1 just a tiny drift off handlers leg and a tiny drop back coming out of a turn. Rec C. HF 3 slight drift and then naughty Kate went wrong corrected herself and used her lead, which upset their rhythm Ret 1 I think the mistake in HF had unsettled them slightly.

ARO 7th Bamboozle You’ve Bin Spotted (Tom) BC. d.o.b 4.4.2000 Handled by Joe Booth: lost 5½ - HOL 2½ dropped back on LT and slight drifting of the handler. Rec. ½ cs. HF 1½ again drifting of the leg the main problem it mostly occurs when Tom has given a little skip as he is walking. Ret. 1.

8th Master Soxs Pre Beg Ex (Soxs) BC. d.o.b 14.5.2002 Handled by Val Long: lost 5½ - HOL 3 most faults caused by handler walking into her dog and pushing him wide he also dropped back on a left turn. Rec ½ cs. HF Again the dog dropped back on the left turn and the handler walked into her dog. Ret ½ cs.

The special rosette for the best unplaced Border Collie or Working Sheepdog went to Debbie Eales and Diesel - Vimick Talk Later Speak A Lot. So if you didn’t get it Debbie, get in touch with Sheilagh, to arrange to collect it and your certificate of merit. A couple of other dogs were eligible for certificates and those that weren’t collected were left with the Show secretary.

I always feel slightly sorry for beginner handlers who find themselves drawn in the first ten. It can’t help their nerves and I’m sure that often their dogs aren’t really concentrating and would perform a lot better later in the day when they had got used to the venue. We had a couple of dogs who would have much preferred to visit the burger van than actually ‘work’ but their handlers took it all with good grace.

Finally MEGA thanks to my steward Julie for doing a brilliant job of guiding the competitors round the ring, no mistakes and it was her first time. She is a member of my Heelwork to Music group and had her arm sort of twisted by me, then she got cold feet a couple of weeks ago, but after we spent most of Wednesday night practising she was a lot happier. Just be careful Julie cause now I know how well you can do it I might ask you again.
