Show Report

Open Breed Show - 9th October 2005

As I write these notes, I keep in mind the two original Judges, Lyn Norton and Tony Blick, whose puppy tragedy touched us all. I wish them both all the very best for the future.

To the sporting exhibitors who accepted my late appointment and decisions, I say thank you.
My entry was interesting in that there was a large variety of types, but I was very pleased with my line-ups in the final challenges.
Judge: Ann Jordan

DOGS

Minor Puppy Dog (5, 1a)
1 & Best Puppy. E Harrison’s LACEWAY BEAT THE HEAT
Promising blue merle with great outline. Sound stance and positive movement with good drive from behind. Lovely head developing and what a nice temperament.
2. Batten’s WYNMALLEN KEEP RUNNING
His first show and went very well, but is very immature which affects his movement at the moment. Shoulder placement is correct and length of body proportionate at present, with a good tail set and topline.
3. J Ridealgh's STILLMOOR SIMPLY BLUE MOSS
Both dog and handler inexperienced which doesn’t help the overall picture, but a good effort for the first show. The dog moved with a rather flat gait but this is due to age. He is a big boy but all may come together in due course.

Puppy Dog (2, 0a)
1. J Beddows' ASPENGLOW FOLLOW ME
I found myself judging two completely different types. This dog is lighter in bone and better proportioned than 2. On moving he displayed a lovely overall shape with a typical head and expression and used his smart pricked ears to perfection.
2. J Nicholson's BEESTING NEW EDITION
This dog was not happy and appeared a bit tucked up, which in turn spoiled my efforts to judge him. He seemed sound enough and, although quite tall, is developing good proportions.

Junior Dog (6, 1a)
1. Fox’s ROSELEY FOREVER MORE
Big strong dog. Intelligent head and expression. Excellent body length and bone. Good slope of pasterns reflected by smooth and reaching gait. Held topline in movement. Nicely shown.
2. Lucas’s TONKORY ENTENTE CORDIAL WITH ACULSIA
Shown in top condition. Typical head and eye. Well set neck and shoulders but a little long in body. Carried tail high in movement confusing the topline. Lovely temperament and handled well.
3. Burdus’s KALIDEN MUCH MORE
Another dog who was ill at ease today. Front assembly slightly out at the toes and a shade too proud of his tail. Needs considerable exercise to improve tone and muscle but there was a show of decent movement to come.

Yearling Dog (6, 0a)
1 and Res. Best Dog. Hales’s WIZALAND COOL NIFTY FIFTY JW
All proportions correct and this was reflected in great movement, which shone in this class. Ample bone and substance, lovely head and mild, intelligent expression and in nice coat and condition.
2. Beaumont’s LOCHEIL TRAVELLIN’ SOUTH TO BORDERBEAU JW
Another great mover, level topline, ample bone. Head still developing. In stance, well proportioned.

Novice Dog (4, 1a)
1. TONKORY ENTENTE CORDIAL WITH ACULSIA
2. ASPENGLOW FOLLOW ME
3. BEESTING NEW EDITION

Post Graduate Dog (1, 0a)
1. Ackary’s STILLMOOR BLUE ICE
The most outstanding blue merle dog I have seen for ages. What a pity he is so uncomfortable in the ring.

Limit Dog (5, 3a)
1, Best Dog & B.I.S. Entwistle’s BEESTING ORLANDO
With two nice dogs in the ring I preferred the head of this one. Spectacular movement with great reach and drive, a true male with dazzling presence, every essence a working Border Collie. When standing, displayed correct conformation in all departments.
2. Paesler’s RESLEAP CHRISTMAS CRACKER
And with no disgrace to be beaten on this occasion, I was splitting hairs. This dog flew around the ring and looked an absolute picture when standing. Shown in superb condition and turned out to perfection.

Open Dog (8, 1a)
1. Broadhurst’s ROSEHURST NO NZ IS GOOD NEWS
Nice style of dog. Alert expression (eventually). He seemed a bit bored until he moved, when he showed off his athletic conformation. A different style of dog from most present as he is tall, but pleasing to the eye, with good bone and angulation.
2. Passey’s CHARTTOP KRACKER
Different completely from 1st but workable and alert with good male features headwise, plenty of bone but not overdone and presented well.
3. Fox’s MIRAJE RUPERT BEAR
Slightly short in muzzle but nice expression. Shoulder placement good with parallel front, both standing and in movement. Nice calm, happy temperament.

Sp Open Dog AOC (3, 2a)
1. STILLMOOR BLUE ICE

Special Open Working Dog (3, 0a)
1. Batten’s GRANDVER JOSHUA AT WYNMALLEN (13 years young)
Prick eared dog in hard condition and very sound.
2. Brearley’s TAMARSH SORCEROR OF TORBRIAR
Different type from 1st. Neat but still masculine head, good mild expression, excellent bone, nice reach and drive in movement.
3. Mockford’s SNOWMERE TARN JW
Prick eared Tri of lighter frame than other two, but could work all day and more. Lovely temperament.

Special Open Members Dog (1, 0a)
1. Ravenscroft’s RAVENSCOL ROCKINGHAM
Big rough coated dog of nice style. Good bone and plenty of reach when moving. Lively and enjoying himself. Worthy winner in any company.

Special Members Utility Dog No entries

Veteran Dog (5, 1a)
1. Miles’s SHOOVIKON THE TRAVELLER. 8 years.
Grand old style of dog. Typical head. Nicely placed neck and shoulders. Lovely movement with correct sloping pasterns and rear angulation.
2. Ravenscroft’s CARISTAN SCOTCH ‘N’ SODA AT RAVENSCOL JW. 7 years.
Longer in body and somewhat smaller than 1st but good bone and moved nicely. Although a little high on pasterns, all other angulations good. Shown in excellent coat.
3. Young’s COLLSHEP ACER. 7 years.
Not in the best of coat today, so his strong head threw the balance a bit. Front and rear movement good.

Vintage Veteran Dog (6, 1a)
1. Burdus’s RYAN'S COUNTRY LAD AT KALIDEN. 10 years.
Strong and striking Tri Dog with a happy temperament and personality plus. Extravagant mover with excellent bone and correct proportions.
2. Entwistle’s SH CH BEESTING TWIGLETTE at the grand old age of 15 years.
I was touched that this wonderful dog had made this journey to be with me today. I have long admired him and it will be many years before his reputation and achievements will be matched. The old sparkle was still there but the body isn’t able to fly as before, I could see he was enjoying his outing and his owner is justified to be proud of the condition he was shown in.
3. Ravenscroft’s RAVENSCOL SLAIDBURN. 10 years.
Another chappie enjoying a day out and looking good. Moved really well, even though his owner had employed a stand-in!

BITCHES

Minor Puppy Bitch (4, 2a)
1. Hale's LACEWAY BEE-WITCHING
Extremely pretty blue merle. Confident, alert, uses her ears well. Petite head, correct head and shoulder placement, pasterns a little upright. True straight movement and excellent coat.
2. Brown’s KALIDEN COOPER JIVE TO SHEPWOOD
Quite immature but coming together. Rather too happy to judge movement and didn’t see any reason to stand still either! Good bone and nice condition.

Puppy Bitch (7, 2a)
1. Beaumont & Turner’s LOCHEIL FIRST TO FINNISH AT BORDERBEAU
Pretty head, still developing and expression. Good bone and slope of pasterns. Nice smooth reaching movement. Very confident and handled well. B.P.B. & Res. BPIS.
2. Inwood’s KINAWAY WOT A BLESSING FOR MEGWOODIE
Quite tall and lacking in coat at present. Nice paces though. Immature head but all proportions good. Needs a bit of time to mature.
3. Dutch’s KINAWAY DUCHESS IN LOVE
Another late maturing puppy. It is a pity that she has to compete against puppies that look so much more together, like 1st she has good proportions but without coat the overall picture is not pleasing to the eye. However she has a lovely temperament and with time will improve.

Junior Bitch (6, 2a)
1. Lucas’s ACULSIA CONTINENTAL DIVA
Very feminine and proportionate bitch, beautifully presented and handled. Alert expression, taking an interest and showing herself well. Nice shoulders, quarters and body length. Sloping pasterns and tight feet and enough bone. Only thing missing was coat!
2. Hynes’ MASYRRA BAILEY
Many comments from 1st also apply, plus excellent topline and nice smooth paces.
3. Burdus’ KALIDEN MELTING MOMENT
Ear carriage noticeably lower than 1st and 2nd and, despite my probably boring repeat critiques of upright pasterns, didn’t move too badly. Good coat and condition.

Yearling Bitch (4, 2a)
1. Morley’s ORIENT CRACKER
Mild expression, good head and neck and longish body, low set and carried tail. Nice coat and condition.
2. COLLSHEP ENCHANTRESS
Longish frame and elbows a little proud at present, like her tail! Another one who will improve with age and exercise.

Novice Bitch (4, 1a)
1. ACULSIA CONTINENTAL DIVA
2. LOCHEIL FIRST TO FINNISH AT BORDERBEAU
3. Kinton's KINAWAY BLESSING IN DISGUISE
Largish bitch, nice straight movement. Good neck and shoulders. Excellent temperament and beautifully handled.

Post Graduate Bitch (8, 1a)
1. Cattell’s DORVALE CUSTOM MAID
Happy pricked eared bitch. Beautiful movement with level topline, correct assembly in all departments, nice bone, correct feet and pasterns and in lovely condition.
2. Moss’s DORVALE MAID WELCOME
The movement of this bitch caught my eye straight away, she has such good reach. A little taller than her sister in 1st. Nice low set tail which sweeps the ground!
3. Porter's TAMARSH CHLOE
Good honest, proportionate bitch. Not flashy, but correct overall with beautiful balanced movement.

Limit Bitch (6, 1a)
1. Ravenscroft’s MIRAJE PLAY MISTY FOR RAVENSCOL JW
Feminine and compact and well balanced bitch with pretty head, correct neck and shoulder set. Body length just right. A bit up on pasterns, but moved well. Great smooth coat and condition.
2. Taylor & Venn's MIRAJE MISS DIOR
This bitch is propped up and leans backwards when standing – I ask the question whether her temperament is doubted by the handler or whether she just hates the show ring. Either way it is not a flattering stance and difficult to judge. I can see a decent bitch and she stood up to examination. She can move well too.
3. Brearley’s TORBRIAR RIVER SERENADE
Nice temperament and movement but lack of stop spoils the head somewhat. Nicely proportioned body and balanced overall.

Open Bitch (3, 1a)
1. Hynes’ SH CH BRIDACRE BRONTE JW
Typical expression. Excellent conformation but lost topline in movement, excellent bone, condition and handled well.
2. Broadhurst’s THISTLEMIST FLY THE FLAG FOR ROSEHURST
A bitch with great body shape but slightly weak underjaw, spoiling the picture standing. However, well balanced overall.

Special Open Bitch AOC (7, 2a)
1. LACEWAY BEE-WITCHING
2. Hales’ BESSAMOUR BLUE SILK
Strong head but still feminine. Chunky looking bitch with excellent movement having good reach and drive. Lovely temperament.
3. TAMARSH CHLOE

Special Open Working Bitch (7, 1a)
1. Mockford’s SNOWMERE JESS
12½ years young, fit and happy bitch. Showing a bit stiffly behind but nevertheless good movement with a lovely topline and excellent coat and condition.
2. Tiller’s FOXBARTON THAT'S JAZZ CDex, UDex
Compact and honest type with a happy temperament.
3. Brearley’s TORBRIAR NAIADA
Large bitch, but proportionate. Ears on the heavy side. Excellent bone and shown in lovely condition.

Special Open Members Bitch (2, 0a)
1. Tiller’s FOXBARTON LADY IN WAITING JW
Nice expression. Good front assembly. Correct body proportions and low tail carriage.
2. Gowing’s WIZALAND STAGE WHISPER AT PIKARA
Active and impatient bitch with dinky head and slightly exaggerated body length. Moved well with good tail carriage.

Special Members Utility Bitch (3, 0a)
1. DORVALE CUSTOM MAID
2. FOXBARTON LADY IN WAITING JW
3. Johnson’s SHIPELLE DOLLY MIXTURE
Light boned bitch and out of coat as well, which doesn’t help! Nevertheless, nice temperament and moved nicely.

Veteran Bitch (3, 0a) All 9 years of age
1. Tunnicliff's SH CH LITTLETHORN ELEGANCE. Best Bitch, Res B.I.S. & Best Veteran.
Eye-catching movement for this bitch who must have done so much for the breed. It is a pleasure to go over a bitch of this quality. Only beaten in the final challenge by age.
2. Entwistle’s SH CH BEESTING ROGANSROCK GIFT
And her gift was Best in Show today, keeping quality in the family and a legacy for the future.

Vintage Veteran Bitch (4, 0a)
1. Broadhurst’s THISTLEMIST ST. FINNANS BELL. 10 years.
Nicely proportioned bitch and moves like a dream.
2. Cattell’s ALTRICIA MUSIC BOX. 10 years.
Still showing lovely movement. So unlucky to meet 1st today.
3. Kinton’s KINAWAY ROMANTIC DREAM. 12 years.
Very sound for her age and still moving like a much younger bitch.
