SHOW REPORT
Championship Show - Sunday 13th February 2005
Dogs - Heather Donnelly
My thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge at their show. Special big thank you to my very competent steward, Joy Russell, for helping me get through this mammoth task. Also to the committee members for all their hard work for making this a successful show. My co. judge and I were in full agreement with the final honours so I apologise to Barbara Swann for not giving you a job to do. Hope you didn’t mind too much.
I was looking for a good sized male, with good length of leg, angled shoulders, well turned stifles who moved with mission and purpose. I did penalise heavy bone, nervousness (adult classes only), feminine heads, excessive movement faults and dogs too low to the ground.
Minor Puppy Dog
1st. BEKKIS KINDRED. Has a very good outline and slope of croup. Correct height to length ratio, medium bone, muzzle to foreface ratio correct with semi pricked ears. Had all the essentials on the move for one so young. Could mature into a quality adult.
2nd. THREJAYS GERAINT. Really liked him. A dog that is slightly longer in body but has fantastic angles, I thought his bone slightly heavy so dropped into second place, but this will probably alter as he matures. A dog I believe to be from sheepdog lines, very skilful breeding indeed, well done.
3rd. TRIBBOCH MR BOJANGLES OF GLENFOUND. Quality boy, needs to grow into his bones too.
Puppy Dog
1st. VIMICK WALKS WITHOUT SOUND. Excellent male. Superb outline, good length of neck leading into well angled shoulders, I particularly liked his height to length ratio. Most memorable was this dog’s most outstanding side fluid side gait, which even swayed the dog judge’s decision for Res. BP. The owner just needs to work on his confidence now for when he will be up with the ‘Big boys’.
2nd. BLACKGOLD COBBER. Very similar to 1, and a close decision, shame he didn’t stick around for ‘Res. Best Puppy Dog’. Presents a very good outline, liked his head and alertness. He has a good length of neck and well angled shoulders, movement wasn’t so fluid as 1. But could change with maturity, although again excellent male.
3rd. BLACKGOLD BRUCE. Litter brother to 2nd and, again, very nice elegant outline. Again needs to settle on the move, but all three top quality males.
Junior Dog
1st. WIZALAND COOL NIFTY FIFTY Very mature and glamorous, he could give the Limit and Open class exhibits a run for their money. He won his place on his outstanding head properties. His was very well balanced and tractile on all four feet. His movement was very precise coming and going.
2nd. LOCHEIL TRAVELLIN’ SOUTH TO BORDERBEAU. A very good male with a particularly good outline. His shoulders angles are good with good bend of stifle. He needs to mature now and I would hide away until he is ready to challenge the best, which he will.
3rd. CLAN-ABBY NZ THUNDERS TIKI AT BORDERBROOK Again very good top line and excellent length of neck. Preferred angles for 2nd.
Special Yearling Dog
1st. CALEYKIZ MR TAMBOURINE MAN TO ROGANSROCK. Beautiful body shape with a good depth of brisket, he has long sloping neck leading to well angled shoulders. I particularly liked his bend of stifle which won him this place over 2. He side gait was very fluid.
2nd. LIONHEART CALLUM FROM TAMARSH. Slightly smaller dog than 1, but no disgrace to take second in this hotly contested class. His glamour is the first thing noticeable but after hands on found he had the confirmation I was looking for.
3rd. L. TRAVELLIN’ SOUTH TO BORDERBEAU.
Novice Dog
1st. BLACKGOLD COBBER
2nd. GOYTRE CHANCE OF PARADYSE. Presents a good outline and liked his arched neck leading to good shoulders. Would prefer more bend of stifle.
3rd. MELNEG ILLUSION A super length of neck leading to a good body shaped. I liked his head properties, as a show dog eyes could have a tad darker eye, only a minor detail.
Graduate Dog
1st. FOXBARTON ROYAL LION. A very good tri coloured young male dog. He has a beautiful ‘painted face’, I loved his elegant body shape and correct bone density. Very sound going and coming just work on the tail position during gaiting, as this could hold him back.
2nd. GLENFOUND SIMPLY SO WHAT. Excellent top line. Particularly liked his long length and slope of croup. Preferred the head of 1 which just edged him into second position.
3rd. RESLEAP CHRISTMAS CRACKER. Has the best of side gaits. Not looking his best today, shame, he should have done better.
Post Graduate Dog
1st. MIRAGE YOU GO BOSS. Very good male with outstanding head. The shoulder blade and upper arm were of particularly good length and well angled. His slope of croup leads onto a good turn of stifle. To be critical I would like a bit more overall of him.
2nd. CARISTAN CHOCOLATE MALT. Best mover in the class. He has excellent confirmation but, being a Red, will take much time to mature in the body. This handler is one of a few who has trained her dogs to gait out properly, a lesson to some new and experienced handlers.
3rd. CORIES RHYS. Really liked the size and shape of this dog but I felt wasn’t allowed his show his full potential on the move.
Limit Dog
A fantastic class, I thought eight dogs worthy of a ticket and especially my five placings.
1st. CC & BIS BEKKIS WHIRLWIND. Well, the picture of excellent in my mind fulfilled. Of correct size and medium bone required for a working dog, which I believes he does, his well proportioned head leads to well muscled neck which broaden to his well angled shoulders. His exceptional outline leads to a good slope of croup and set of tail. His upper thighs are strong with a good bend of stifle. He stands very neat and tidy on his rear legs. An intelligent combination of show and sheepdog bloodlines, full credit to the breeders. His side gait was stunning and couldn’t be denied by my co judge which was very tough decision.
2nd. WIZALAND LIVIN’ SOUL. Although slightly smaller than 1, an excellent male, I thought him very similar to my Junior winner. An outstanding modelled head and alertness when baited. He has a well-arched and muscled neck leading to an elegant outline. His soundness gave great tractability going and coming.
3rd. ROSEHURST DIRTY DEN. A very good sized male dog. He didn’t initially catch my eye as he is quite a dark dog but after inspection and the more I saw the more I liked him. He flowed around the ring and pushed the winners hard, but like others in this class only minor picky points put him in 3rd.
Open Dog
1st. Res CC SIANWORTH CELTIC MAGICIAN. This dog had to pull out of the stops to win this class but his quality couldn’t be denied. Correct sized dog with excellent body shape, very well angled shoulder with the best turn of stifle seen all day. His side gait was on a par with the best movers of the day, pleased to award him the Res. CC today but, like his father, will probably need to be 7 or 8 before he wins top honours.
2nd. MELNEG WILD WAYS WITH MENLOVE. Loved his attitude but I can see how unfairly this could hold him back. Super outline, leading to well powered thighs and bend of stifle. No weakness at hock joints and tractile feet. Although thought him to be glamorous I think him to be a good working dog. To be ultra critical I would like overall more of him.
3rd. CARISTAN SCOTCH ‘N’ SODA AT RAVENSCOL. Very good neck and shoulders liked him but would prefer slightly less bone for me.
Veteran Dog
1st. Sh Ch MADELEYS TIME CHALLENGER. Caught my eye as he entered the ring. Exceptional well proportioned head with a particularly dark eye. I loved his elegant, arched neck superbly showed of by his long white collar. A worthy champion who still will have many more success’s in the ring despite entering his autumn years.
2nd. Sh Ch BEESTING TWIGLETTE. I nearly dropped a tear when I saw this old boy. As always outstanding movement but today was the first time ever I have seen Jean run faster than him.
3rd. Sh Ch BORDERBEAU COUNTRY CHOICE. Another dog with outstanding movement and still very sound despite his years.
Special Open Working
All dogs in this class the correct weight and fitness.
1st. BEKKIS VIRTUOSO CDex UDex. Beautifully shaped working dog and done much to prove it. Liked his tri coloured painted face and medium bone. Good length and angles of shoulders, level topline. Long and good slope of croup and well turned stifles. Very close up on the Res.CC . Again like all tricolours, like a good bottle of wine will get better with age.
2nd. TOSARI BAROQUE OF KAELEON. Liked his movement, very elegant outline and good angulations at the rear.
3rd. TAMARSH SORCEROR OF TORBRIAR. Quality dog in good hard condition and fitness.
