SHOW REPORT
First Championship Show - Sunday 1st February 2004
Dogs - Kathleen E Burnell
I would like to thank the committee for the invitation to judge at this their first Championship Show. The show was efficiently run and I was made to feel very welcome. A big thank you goes to my two ring stewards who ably assisted me throughout the day.
I have always felt a connection with this club ever since it first started as a Branch of the Border Collie Club of G.B. I was a founder member and Secretary before taking on the same position with the parent club. It was lovely to meet up after so long, with other friends that were around in the early days of this Club.
The show venue was good and the ring size adequate for all but the largest of classes, which were accommodated by extending into the bitch ring. I had a lovely entry of 124 dogs making 143 entries.
I was pleased to see that the tail length of the majority of dogs here today is now just within the standard with very few noticeably too short. Presentation of coats, without exception was good. However, more than 50% of today’s exhibits had dirty teeth, not just a little tartar on the gum line, many had a whole brown mouth and clearly had not chewed on anything hard for months, also far too many dogs lacked muscle tone and did not give me the impression of endurance as requested in the standard.
I know that most of the Border Collies in the show ring now will never get the opportunity to do the job they were originally bred for through no fault of their owners, but it is up to the custodians of the breed to ensure that they are at least physically capable of doing the work.
Best in Show was Foster-Coopers SHELTYSHAM SUCH A DREAMER gaining her title here today.
Reserve Best in Show was Broadhursts ROSEHURSTS GOLDEN SAND gaining his second CC.
Best Puppy was Jefferson & Hornsbys BEKKIS DULCIMER
Reserve Best Puppy was Hastie & Turner’s LOCHEIL CHIC OF THE DEVIL AT LETHANS
Minor Puppy Dog 10/0 abs.
1. Barratt’s PENDLEWAY IVANHOE 8mths, a masculine dog with a dark eye and a gentle expression, good size, lovely coat, liked his overall balance, moved very well.
2. Gregory’s TONKORY BORIS nice puppy of the same age, good head and expression, moved well, just preferred the balance of Ivanhoe.
3. Collins BLACKGOLD HEMP
Puppy Dog 11/2 abs.
1. Hastie/Turner’s LOCHEIL CHIC OF THE DEVIL AT LETHANS 9mths, a smart B/W with just a little bit of mottling, very pleased with his bone, nothing weedy or feminine about this young man, sturdy and neat. Lovely head and eye, well balanced with the best of fronts, moved very well for his age, this dog will be taking the top
honours in the not too distant future. Best Puppy Dog
2. TONKORY BORIS
3. Cranch’s BEKKIS FAST FORWARD
Junior Dog 16/6 abs.
1. Webber’s BEKWEY BOP TILL’U’ DROP 16mths, a handsome B/W with full white collar, good ear carriage, dark eyes, well presented and handled.
2. Amos's DAZLEROCK HARRY POTTER 14mths, a well muscled, prick eared young dog who did everything asked of him, however, I felt that he was more used to being moved on grass and was not prepared to show us what he was capable of on this floor.
3. Allen’s MIRAJE TAZINDY WITH LATTONWOOD
Special Yearling Dog 12/3 abs.
1. Ackary’s STILLMOOR BLUE ICE 18mths, this dog caught my eye immediately on entering the ring. I can see those who attended looking back with a smile thinking, of course he did, you can’t fail to notice a blue merle in the BC ring, there are still not that many about. However,
colour apart, this dog has a lovely head, good ear carriage, gentle dark eye, short strong muzzle and good stop, good forequarters and angulation at the rear. Well-sprung ribs with good balance overall, on the move both fore and aft he was so true, and in spite of his handler he showed me a lovely side profile. In the challenge for best of breed this handler could not get the best from her dog, which is a great pity. I suggest a few obedience/ringcraft classes would be beneficial. Reserve Best Dog
2. Large’s WIZALAND LIVIN’ SOUL JW 20mths, an attractive B/W with many qualities, good size and shape, nicely balanced and well handled, moved well.
3. Broadhurst’s ROSEHURST DIRTY DEN
Novice Dog 9/1 abs.
1. Mathews’s KINSTERS UPWOOD BOUND 4th in the previous class, B/W dog with a good side gait.
2. Smith’s LITTLETHORN JENSON OF TERVERLEY a pretty tri dog, movement needs more drive and reach. Perhaps he would be better outside.
3. James’s THREJAYS CYMRO also v.h.c. in junior
Graduate Dog 5/1abs.
1. Brearley’s TORBRIAR RIVER MUSIC JW I can see how this dog has gained his JW. He is very well constructed and stood out in this class, good head with a kind expression, well angulated front and back, nice bone. A quality dog.
2. Maryan Green’s FOXBARTON ROYAL LION JW 2yrs, an attractive tri with a lovely head and ear carriage which give him a keen but gentle expression, a sound mover but not as fluid as the winner.
3. Walmsley’s MIRAJE GENTLEMAN BROWN AT ROBENGER 2 yrs
Post Graduate Dog 10/1 abs.
1. STILLMOOR BLUE ICE.
2. Welch’s WIZINBY INTO THE BLUE 2 yrs. Standing this dog is a well balanced B/W with good angulation fore and aft, with let down hocks, not quite the drive of Blue Ice and tail should be longer.
3. Norton & Blick’s MANDERIAN MORNING SON
Limit Dog 33/3 abs.
The largest class of the day, I was pleased with all the 5 dogs that were placed and could easily change them around in the future.
1. Bridgeman’s MOBELLA HENNESSEY OF TARRYNDEN JW 2yrs 10mths, a B/W of good size with lovely clean angles carrying the correct amount of weight. Good head and expression, this dog has particularly well laid shoulders, which was noticeable on the move giving good reach and a smooth tireless action.
2. Wilkinson’s ALTRICIA MORRIMINT 2yrs 3mths. A close decision between this dog and the winner, many of the same qualities, both presented to perfection. I made a special note that this dog had good feet of the correct shape, so many in the ring today have almost round, splayed feet, untypical and unhealthy for the breed.
3. Jefferson & Hornsby’s BEKKIS VIRTUOSO
Open Dog 23/5 abs.
1. Broadhurst’s ROSEHURST GOLDEN SAND, 2yrs 8mths, an athletic looking tri, well muscled, good clean lines without any exaggeration, excellent head shape, good stop and strong muzzle, well shaped dark eyes and tipped ears, good strong neck leading down to well laid shoulders, good spring of ribs, firm topline, muscular thighs with well let down hocks, tail set and length correct. A powerful moving dog, with a handler that gets the best from him. I was pleased award him Best Dog.
2. Ward’s SH CH CARISTAN MOET CHANDON 4yrs 8 mths, my next two dogs are quite similar in type, and both very good specimens of the breed with little to fault about either, however a decision has to be made.
3. Green’s SH CH TONKORY PALMERSTON AT FAYKEN JW. A dog I awarded the reserve CC to at Crufts 1999 when he was a youngster, before he had won any CCs. Presented to perfection as always but seemed to lack interest today which showed on the move.
Veteran Dog 8/2abs
Ages ranging from 7yrs - 11 yrs
1. Burdus’s RYAN’S COUNTRY LAD AT KALIDEN 9yrs 7mths, a tri colour looking younger than his years, good head and expression, nice coat and in good condition. Moved soundly at a steady pace.
2. Soper’s MOBELLA JACK OF CLUBS AT VIMICK 9yrs 3 mths, a well balanced blue merle in excellent coat and condition, just preferred the front angulation of the winner.
3. Foster-Cooper’s SH CH SHELTYSHAM SWAGMAN 11yrs 3mths
Special Open Working 7/2abs
1. BEKKIS VIRTUOSO 3yrs 7mths. A handsome tri like his dad with a lovely head, good bone, well laid shoulders, moved well.
2. Hanson’s WATHON BARREL OF FUN AT BASILBROOK 4yrs 7mths, a B/W with good bone, pleasing head, stood well and moved OK.
3. Brearley’s TAMARSH SORCEROR OF TORBRIAR
